Binding, catalogue of the exposition in Paper Mill De Schoolmeester about the papermakers for the printing of the American Declaration of Independence
Throughout the world a million and a half Mennonites consider themselves to be spiritually bound to the teaching of the 16th century Dutch church reformer Menno Simons. The newly published ‘Timeline: a living echo of Menno Simons’ from the International Menno Simons Centre gives insight into the evolution of ‘five centuries of dedication’.
The black cardboard cover for the ‘Timeline’ and for this booklet was made ‘by wind and by hand’ from black cotton rags and flax at the paper windmill the Schoolmeester in Westzaan; for generations the property of the Mennonite family De Jong.
The Exhibition ‘Binding’ commemorates the significant position held by Mennonites for generations in the Zaanstreek, especially during the 17th and 18th centuries, when trade and industry developed along the banks of the river Zaan and Mennonite entrepreneurs occupied a dominant position. Their contribution to the paper trade has resulted in Zaanse paper becoming world-renowned.
This is demonstrated by the fact that the first printing of the American Declaration of Independence was printed predominantly on Dutch paper. Of the (approximately 200) broadside copies printed, 25 are known to exist, 16 of which contain watermarks from the Zaanse Mennonite papermakers D & C Blauw, Jacob Honig & Zoonen and Adriaan Rogge.
The Netherlands’ great support for the realization of American Independence, which in turn re-inspired Dutch Patriotism, has formed a solid base for friendship between both countries that has lasted for centuries.
